Often called the prettiest lake trek in Kashmir, Tarsar Marsar takes you deep into the wilderness bordering Dachigam National Park, following the Lidder River from the meadows of Aru into the higher reaches of the Lidderwat valley. Along the way, dense pine forests give way to open alpine pastures, with the towering Kolahoi Peak visible for much of the route. The trek’s highlight is its pair of almond-shaped twin lakes, Tarsar and Marsar, separated by a narrow mountain ridge and rarely visited together in a single glance — reaching Marsar requires a short additional climb from Tarsar’s campsite, rewarding trekkers with one of the most striking views in the entire valley. Along the route, trekkers pass through shepherd meadows like Shekwas and Sundersar, often spotting grazing sheep, Gujjar settlements, and, occasionally, Himalayan wildlife such as musk deer. With moderate daily distances and a gradual altitude gain, Tarsar Marsar is well suited to trekkers with some prior hiking experience looking for a slightly less crowded alternative to the Kashmir Great Lakes route.
