Pahalgam, the "Valley of Shepherds," lies along the banks of the Lidder River at the base of pine-covered mountains. Once a humble shepherd's village, it has grown into one of Kashmir's most visited valleys, known for its cool climate, dense forests, and gentle riverside walks. It also serves as the traditional base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage.
Just outside the town, Betaab Valley and Aru Valley offer some of the region's most striking scenery — meadows framed by snow-dusted peaks and forests that turn golden in autumn. Pahalgam is also the starting point for several of Kashmir's most popular treks, including Kashmir Great Lakes, Tarsar Marsar, and Kolahoi Glacier, making it a favourite among both leisure travellers and trekkers.
